3 Reasons We Should Be Healthy and Fit

“I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.” Romans 12:1 NIV

Each of our bodies belong to God. It is His property, He owns it. God expects us to take care of our bodies. We are the caretakers, stewards, or managers who must use it the way He intended it.

Time will come when we will stand before God and give an account of everything that He has entrusted to us. That includes our bodies.

Taking care of yourself physically is vital in our Christian life. It is a spiritual discipline to keep our bodies in shape. It is not about looking good and losing weight. It is about glorifying God and doing what He wants us to do.

Here are 3 reasons why we should be healthy and fit.

  1. It glorifies God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says that “whatever we do we must do it for the glory of God.” In Isaiah we were told that God formed and created us to glorify Him. That’s our main purpose in life. When we care for our body and live a healthy lifestyle, we are glorifying God.
  1. We’ll have more energy to do God’s work. The more fit we are, the more energy we have and the more effort we can put into the tasks God has given to us. Being out of shape makes our work seem even more difficult than it is. If we have better health, we have more energy.
  1. Jesus paid for our bodies with his death on the cross. 1 Corinthians 6:20 says, “You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Maybe that is difficult to understand, but God really does live within us. He expects us to be wise stewards of our bodies. Let us take care of ourselves physically so that when people look at us, they will see that we are really doing everything we can to glorify God.
