5 Rules That Will Help You Set Your Personal Goals

Have you experienced traveling without a clear destination in mind? If you have, chances are you might have had an interesting adventure, but there’s also the possibility that you’ve  wound up somewhere you didn’t want to be. That’s why it is very important to set goals because it’ll serve as a roadmap or a guide to your journey!

Here are a five core principles to live by when setting personal goals:

  1. Set Goals That Genuinely Motivate You

Can you imagine setting a goal that doesn’t excite you? It doesn’t sound like much fun, right? And if you don’t really enjoy doing something, chances are you’ll give up on it even before you achieve it. So, when you think about setting a goal, understand first why it is so meaningful to you. If you’re not truly excited about it, then it’s probably not worth pursuing.

  1. Set SMART Goals

There are a lot of variations of what SMART stands for. But in essence, goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.  Setting SMART goals will give you the chance to evaluate your progress objectively. SMART goals will allow you to answer your questions with a clear “yes” or “no,” which can help motivate you to go for the gold.

  1. Put Goals Into Writing

Make your goals tangible and real, and make them important. When you write your goals down, use the words “I will” instead of unsure words like “I might.” When you use “I will”,   empowers you and strengthens your intent to accomplish your goals.

  1. Make An Action Plan

When you write individual steps, and put a check mark once you’ve completed it, you’ll be able to visualize the progress that you’re making—where you are at your goal and what you have achieved so far. This is so important, especially if the goal is big and will take a long time to achieve.

  1. Stay The Course

Remember that goal setting is an ongoing process, not just a means to an end. Make sure to set reminders to keep yourself on track, and make time to review these goals regularly.

With these five tips in mind, your personal goals become a more concrete part of your future, rather than a wishlist with no definition. Knowing where you want to be is important, but knowing how to get there is even better.
