In the above, Merriam-Webster lists down the meanings of the word “success.” Although this may be widely-accepted definitions, they do not quite capture the true essence of it.
There are many forms of success and this in itself is seen through various perspectives, with measures that differ from individual to individual. What it is to be successful for one person is not necessarily the same for another. As persons, we need to identify our own requirements for success. We may go through life walking around proclaiming “I want to be a successful person!” and having this as a life vision, or thinking that we have already attained success without even knowing what it actually means to be truly successful—at least in our own terms. That is why the meaning of this is something that is very personal and something that cannot be captured through a simple textbook definition.
“The only way of creating anything is by understanding exactly what it is that you are attempting to create”- Paul Hudson, Elite Daily, June 2013. This means that we first have to define success before we can actually create it. And to define success means to look inwardly, breaking down our lives into its different parts and taking a look at them constructively—identifying what it is that we truly want to achieve and what we should be doing in order to achieve all that we have envisioned for ourselves.
Then we take a look at our current realities, relationships, day-to-day activities, and begin to see whether all of these add up to helping us as individuals maximize our full potential and become our very own versions of success.
Let’s take a look at your career for example. For you, what does it mean to be thriving and successful in this aspect of your life? Does it mean making a certain annual salary amount so that you could live a life of luxury? Does it mean being a leader who is able to inspire others through your work and motivate them to become the best at their respective fields? Or does it mean being able to take your brand further and gain a significant increase in market share through your initiatives?
As a person, it’s important to know what it will take to make you successful—in your own terms—so that everything you do is aligned with your objectives.
Jeff Haden, in his article The Best Definition of Success is the One You Never Had says that determining your level of success is based on solely one question: “How happy am I?” The happier you are, chances are the more successful you are. Because personal contentment and genuine happiness are clear indicators that what you are doing and where you are at the moment is aligned with what you want, what makes you satisfied, what you value the most
Therefore, in the end, if you are not personally satisfied and content with your situation, look at your own thoughts, dreams, feelings, actions, habits and personality characteristics and determine what it is that you truly want in life. You have everything you need inside of you to have success. (Radun, Lori. “A New Definition of Success.” Success Coaching. SelfGrowth. Web.)
