Double Your Blessings

We are all blessed with time, talent, skills, opportunities, and circumstances. We are given these for a reason – to share them with others.

Giving, whether it’s through time, talent, or resources gives us a sense of gratitude and humility. It opens our eyes to see the blessings we have been given. It is through giving that we learn to appreciate even the smallest blessings.

It took me some time to realize this on a deeper level.

Two years ago, a friend invited me to their feeding program in Laguna. Being a first-timer attending such an event, I really didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t really into the activities, but I joined them.

The second time I joined a feeding program, I was involved in searching for a beneficiary community. This time, I was more hands-on. I asked questions, helped with the preparations, and I really participated. It was then that I realized how lucky I truly was.

The next program I joined with this group was in Tondo. The enthusiasm of the kids were overwhelming, and overwhelming is an understatement! Not just the kids, but the parents as well.

These experiences made me see how vastly different the upbringing of kids in different areas and situations really is. It made me see how extremely lucky I am to be raised in a healthy and comfortable environment and it made me truly grateful for what I have.

Since then, I have been actively supporting feeding programs and other organizations with their health programs for kids. I may not be able to contribute my time always, and I may not have much resources, but what I can contribute, I contribute freely.

Giving makes us grateful for what we have. It opens our heart and mind to other people’s needs. It reminds us that we can always do something to give back. It opens up a platform for our compassion to flow towards others.

A speaker in church once said that when God pours blessings to us, we have to receive them with open hands. Both hands should be open- to receive the blessings and to share the blessings with others, because as we continue to share, the Lord continues to shower us with blessings. As channels of God’s blessings, we learn to reflect God’s love to us by loving other people and sharing what we have with them; God is glorified when we share His blessings with other people.

I’m not saying that we should do something spectacular. There are a lot of issues around us; choose the ones closest to our heart, and start small. Give, and give wholeheartedly. It may not make a really big impact, but it can inspire more people to make a move.

“I said, ‘Somebody should do something about that.’ Then I realized, I AM somebody.” – Lily Tomlin
