Christmas is one of the most awaited holidays that Filipinos look forward to every year. It is anticipated with much hope and excitement; as soon as the “ber” months kicks in, the transition into a festive mood becomes more evident. Given that the pre-Christmas rush starts as early as October for many of us, this also means that we are given ample amount of time to give.
With a tight budget for the holidays, this kept me thinking of ways in which I can give without spending a lot. Here are some gift ideas I came up with to spice up the holidays:
Each of us is given 365 days in a year, but have you even noticed how some of these days are wasted? I believe that time lost cannot be recovered. Sometimes, we get so caught up in daily tasks, or spending most of our time with friends and not family. We can always find ways to balance the two- for example, you can invite your friends for a dinner at home or attend Simbang Gabi together with your family. Not only will this help you share quality time together but this will also solidify that you’ve built up friendships that will come through for you.
A gift from the heart is not only about giving time, but sharing your talents as well. Do you cook well or are you into making DIY Crafts? Whatever it is that you are passionate about, create a unique item out of it and make what you do the gift that you give. Make it more special by adding a short note that you can attach to each of your gifts. Tell your receiver what he or she means to you and the value they bring to your life.
I have a collection of journals and stationaries at home. A friend of mine saw them and told me that he dreamt of having one (while pointing on a notebook) but didn’t have the chance to buy one since it cost a lot. That notebook was my uncle’s gift that I haven’t used yet, so I decided to wrap it up and give it to him for Christmas last year. It was indeed a special gift that cost me nothing, but meant everything to him.
- Small Actions Done With Great Love
Doing small things for others wholeheartedly can be a gift as well. Have you ever tried donating blood, joining a small feeding program or even a clean-up drive in your local barangay? Take time to commit yourself to reaching out to others and you’ll end up being happier and blessed.
- A Smile
I know it sounds crazy but one of the best gifts you can give, even to those whom you do not know, is just a piece of your smile. You’ll never know who can get inspired with that vibrant and joyful smile of yours. So, cheer up and smile!
Just like what Winston Clinton once said,” We make a living by what we get, but we can make a life by what we give.” Let us continue to open our hearts and cultivate the habit of giving. It doesn’t matter how small or big it is, what’s important is that we put our hearts into it. I guess that’s the real essence of giving- to offer the best gift that carries a message of love and joy that lingers in the heart of the receiver long after the gift has been consumed, used or put away—the things that money can
