What would you do if it were your last day on earth?
This is definitely a question that holds the ‘Shock Factor’. None of us want to think about the day we might die, nor is it a very nice thing to imagine that we would only have one day left on earth, but the reality is that none of us know when our last day on earth will be. For any of us, it could be today or tomorrow. At least it’s a possibility.
Because we are spoilt with so many new things in life today, it’s often quite hard to focus on any one thing. We are so distracted by the ‘eye candy’ around us that we would prefer to enjoy those things instead of help save the planet from global warming, help the needy, or even appreciate the most important things we already have in our lives.
That’s why this question holds the shock factor, as it gets us thinking about what is in fact most important to us. Most of us would say our loved ones. And more often than not we are left with little time before we start to focus on what is most important to us, as we allow distractions to turn from hours to days to weeks, then years. Time doesn’t wait for us, it keeps moving so we have to think now of the things we treasure the most.
Here are a few ways we can make the most of what is important to us, as if it were our last day on earth.
- Write a list of what we are thankful for.
Those things we are thankful for usually deserve some time and appreciation.
- Give thanks.
Whatever is important to us, for example our loved ones, make it a point to tell them how important they are to us every day, tell them how much they mean to you and why, tell them how much you love them and all the things they have contributed to your life and how much you have learned from them. After all, we never know when they will be hearing the last words from us. Only God knows.
- Ask God.
Don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Sometimes we need to have alone time with God, keep praying to see clearly what he wants for our lives. Ask him what his purpose is for our lives and what we should be doing more of, or what directions we should be taking. That way we can be at peace knowing that every day is not wasted and we are exactly where we should be at this time.
- Keep learning new things.
Let’s never limit ourselves to what we ‘have’ to know. Lets always appreciate life and everything that’s in it, and make the most of having access to the internet to read up on different subjects, or ask more questions to the people we meet about their occupation and their experiences. We too often want to talk about ourselves, and usually we talk about the same things. The more we learn, the more we will be able to share to others too.
- Take a look at your gifts.
God has given everyone of us a gift or talent, some of us more than just one. Wouldn’t it be a waste to be given a beautiful new car rapped in a big bow, and never use it? Maybe we still haven’t yet gotten our driving license, so what’s stopping us? Mastering our talents will always take a bit of work, but what a waste if we don’t work on them. God’s gifts to us are true blessings, and why go through life not even using them?
- Work hard at the things you want more of in your life.
If you want more love in your life then give more love to others. It’s amazing what happens when we bless others, this is when we will see the biggest blessings in our own life. We do not become happy by focusing on how happy we can be, but by trying each day to make others happy. Leading by example, putting a smile on someone else’s face can do amazing things for our own life.
- Remember to rest.
As well as working hard, we also need to learn to slow down. Sometimes we are working so hard on a goal that we miss all the lessons along the way. What if we were in such a hurry to get to a meeting, that we miss the beautiful sunset on the way, or the colorful flowers waiting to brighten our day, or the homeless person we could have blessed. What if we are working so hard to accomplish something that we miss appreciating the people that help us along the way, or to get to know them a bit better, or to understand why we ended up more confident by the time we reached our goal. How many of us would remember every single thing that added to our confidence, be it the different experiences, knowledge, affirmations from others, rewards, acknowledgments etc, two years down the line if we were not paying close attention to the process? Paying attention to the process allows us to understand ourselves better, understand the people around us better, understand the lessons in life better and is actually quite humbling.
- Let go of past regrets.
We cannot possibly make the most of today if we are holding onto regrets from the past. Our experiences good or bad teach us valuable lessons, they also help us become wiser and stronger, not to mention they are already done and dusted. There is absolutely no benefit by holding onto mistakes, and so much benefit in learning from the mistake and moving on. Remember failure is a good thing as it shows we are trying new things and challenging ourselves to move out of our comfort zone. Maybe we have made some terrible choices, but that’s a great time to reflect. Sit back and reset our values. Use it as a valuable lesson to stick to our values, to use our values as a reference point for all future decisions. There is no use in dwelling on what has already been done. We can still be excited for being blessed with today and a future ahead of us, that’s already a huge blessing, so let’s not hold ourselves back by holding onto things that simply don’t matter anymore.
There are so many things to be thankful for. So many blessings in our lives, so instead of getting distracted by the things that don’t last, the things that will not be there for us long term, lets treat each day like it were our last and live out God’s purpose for our lives, while being thankful for every single blessing along the way.
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
